Testy McPosty

I've just upgraded my poor neglected blogging software to Movabletype 3.32... so this is just a little post to see if things are working right. I'll try to post something more meaningful and interesting soon!

I think I broke it...

Hmmm... not letting me have comments, and Liz can't post at all now. Great...

new test

never update blogging software just before you think you are going to bed...

I think I actually fixed the problem... either that or I broke it in some way that will come back to haunt me later. I really need to learn more perl scripting. I really like the new interface for this blogging software. Much more user-friendly. Of course you can't see that right now, because I haven't changed the template at all. I'll play with it more this weekend.

Yet another test

I continue to tinker... and might have just figured out what was taking up all my webserver disk space. Or, as usual, I might have broken the whole thing. Wish me luck...

Experiencing Technical Difficulties

I've moved to a new webhosting service... and that has meant moving Movabletype, the software that runs our blogs. Movabletype is an evil evil thing... Hopefully we'll be back up and running at 100% soon. For the moment, comments may be broken. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Dave FTW!

Wow, I have a headache... but I've managed to get our blogs back up and functioning. They aren't pretty. Because of the huge upgrade to the Movable Type software, and the fact that we are now hosted on a server that can make full use of those upgrades, I pretty much had to scrap our old stylesheets and master templates. Oh well. It was time for a change anyway. It'll give both Liz and I an excuse to try new things with our page layouts. Maybe install some cool new plugins.

Just to throw in something NOT related to the dark and steaming guts of my website, here's an article about how
fatherhood may actually physically change your brain (in a good way)... at least if your a monkey.

Something to Chew On

It was a momentous weekend for the little dude... He got his first tooth! He'll be chomping away on babyback ribs and corn-on-the-cob in no time. This whole teething thing is not much fun for anyone involved, but what can you do? While I don't personally remember what it was like to cut teeth, I can guarantee that it'll be worth it in the long run. I've had mine for a long time now and I'm still using them.

He also got to hang out with his cousins yesterday, which is always a blast. I'm constantly amazed that that much cute can fit into one room.

Tentative Thumbs Up

I wasn't going to write any more about the "behind-the-scenes" workings of my blog, but I just have to say this... As frustrating as it was to install, upgrade, and transfer our blogs to the new verison of Movable Type, now that it's all up and running I'm pretty happy with it. Please note the absence of comment spam. So far, Movable Type 3.32 hasn't let a single piece of comment spam past it's filters! I'm sure that won't last forever, but at the moment it's really nice not to have to spend time cleaning out all the crud from my comment lists. It's got some other nicer features as well, which made it well worth the upgrade.

I also have to mention that my new webhost pSek.com (thanks for the tip, Paul) has been working out really well so far. They offer more features, have responded faster to queries, and cost about a third of the price of my old webhost. Of course I've only been with them for a couple of weeks now, so there is still time for things to go hideously wrong. For now, I remain cautiously optimistic.

Okay, I'm done writing about back end stuff that probably no one but me cares about. My next post will be about something else, I promise.

Six Months Old!

I meant to post about this yesterday, but as usual, life intervened and I didn't have time.

Yesterday, Alex turned 6 months old.

My first reaction was:
"It's been six months already?"

My immediate second reaction was:
"It's only been six months?"

If I had more time and brain cells, I would now launch into a dissertation about the ability of infants to warp the time/space continuum into shapes that the adult mind is unable to fully perceive, causing a kind of long-term cognitive dissonance. Extended exposure to this phenomenon reduces the adult brain to the consistency of tapioca pudding... not, as some have argued, tapioca beads, as found in Japanese bubble tea.

But I digress, and time is short.

It seems like just yesterday that we brought him home from the hospital... and also like a lifetime ago. So weird...

Six months ago this amazing little kid came out of the womb and into our lives. Absolutely nothing has been the same since, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s amazing to watch him grow and learn and develop such a sweet personality. He smiles and laughs like a maniac, and wants to crawl more than anything on earth. He has places to go and things to do, and I’ll be happy to go to those places and do those things with him for as long as he’ll let me.

Happy Six Months and a Day, Alex!
